Still life and abstract

I guess it’s also my grandmother who made me want to try out still life painting. I don’t have much time to create work like these anymore, but I hope this part of my website would still grow at some point in the future.

I’m presenting just a few items as of now. It’s too bad I didn’t photograph a lot of my work during and after college, up to the time our house got flooded and we lost a lot of items. But hey, that should motivate me to draw or paint more still life!

Abstract art, on the other hand, is my most recent venture; I only started in 2021. These are done using various brushes (some built-in, some purchased) in the Procreate app, on my iPad. In this portfolio, though, I put all the artworks on a PSD mockup of an easel and canvas, to present them as if they’re not digital. Just window-dressing!

Still life

“Red Shoes”

This was my first-ever attempt in still life using some of my grandmother’s soft pastels, on Canson paper. On top of that, these are my first-ever Converse shoes that I bought with my own money.

“Yellow Rose”

This was my first-ever attempt painting a flower, and I enjoyed it immensely. It was painted on my Samsung Note phone.

“Three Apples”

This was my first-ever attempt painting any fruit, also on my Samsung Note phone. I wish I had more work to show under the still life category, but bread-and-butter graphic design takes up most of my time. I expect to work on more paintings like this when I am older or retired; doing it feels so serene and therapeutic. I am grateful I can make these sorts of things.

“Girl on a Wagon”

This one isn’t really a still life painting, but it’s here because it’s not a portrait either. It’s made with Golden Open acrylics which I wanted to try out at that time. Eventually, I realized I didn’t have the patience to wash brushes frequently and keep a clean space outside of all the digital work I already do each day, and I also didn’t have enough space in my flat to sustain an acrylic painting hobby. I gave this painting to one of my aunts.

Abstract

“Mervin’s Love”

A birthday gift to my boyfriend.

“Born Knowing Nothing”

My official first attempt.

“Love, Not Guilt”

Inspired by the manner by which the Baby Boomers disciplined my generation- I was thinking about that when I made this.

“Laban, Leni”

Inspired by the #LabanLeni2022 campaign.

“Never That Simple”

What constantly baffles me is how people seem allergic to complexity and are determined to understand issues only in the simplest terms. I was thinking about that when I made this.
